10 Essentials for a Stress‑Free Move

Moving doesn’t have to be chaotic. With the right preparation and a few pro tips, you can turn one of life’s most stressful events into a smooth, organised transition. Here are the ten essentials our team swears by.

1. The “First Night” Box

Pack a clearly labelled box with everything you’ll need immediately upon arrival: toiletries, a change of clothes, phone chargers, basic tools, coffee/tea, and any medications. This saves you from rummaging through dozens of boxes after a long day.

2. Quality Packing Tape & Dispenser

Cheap tape tears, loses adhesion, and causes boxes to pop open. Invest in a good tape gun with strong, wide packing tape – it speeds up the process and keeps boxes secure.

3. Colour‑Coded Labels

Assign a colour to each room (e.g., red for kitchen, blue for bedroom). Stick matching coloured stickers on boxes and on the doors of the corresponding rooms. Movers will know exactly where everything goes without asking.

4. Furniture Pads & Shrink Wrap

Even if you hire professionals, it’s smart to have extra padding for fragile items or to protect sofa corners. Shrink wrap keeps drawers closed and prevents dirt from getting on upholstery.

“I’ve moved five times, and using colour‑coded labels was a game changer. The movers placed every box in the right room – I didn’t have to lift a finger.”
— Sarah, SwiftMove customer

5. A “Moving Binder”

Keep all your important documents (contracts, inventory lists, receipts, change‑of‑address forms) in one portable binder. You’ll have instant access to anything you need during the move.

6. Basic Toolkit

Screwdrivers, Allen keys, a hammer, and a utility knife will be used constantly – for disassembling furniture, cutting tape, and making small adjustments. Keep them handy, not buried in a box.

7. Trash Bags & Cleaning Supplies

You’ll generate a surprising amount of waste (packing paper, broken-down boxes). Have heavy‑duty trash bags on hand. Also, keep basic cleaners and paper towels to do a quick wipe‑down of empty rooms or appliances.

8. Snacks & Water

Moving is physical work. Pack a cooler with drinks and easy snacks (granola bars, fruit). Staying hydrated and fed keeps energy levels up and tempers down.

9. Camera or Smartphone

Take photos of electronic setups (cable connections, computer wiring) before unplugging. Also, photograph valuable items for insurance purposes. It’s a simple step that can save headaches later.

10. A Positive Attitude & Flexibility

No move is 100% perfect. Unexpected delays happen. Take a deep breath, trust your movers, and remember why you’re moving – to a new chapter, a new home, or a new adventure.
